Small towns. Deep community roots. And I think that proximity matters more than we usually acknowledge.

Voting is one of the most personal things a person does. It’s a reflection of your hopes, your fears, your vision of what the world should look like. It’s an expression. And when something that intimate gets tangled up in noise, rumors, and national narratives that feel abstract and distant, people don’t just get confused. They disengage. They feel like the whole enterprise has nothing to do with them.

Local officials are the antidote to that. Because of their community roots, they’ve found their way into the actual information streams — the local Facebook groups, the gadfly pages, the neighborhood chatter. They’re trusted in ways that county-level officials rarely get to be.

It made me a little wistful. Running elections in Cook County, I had 126 cities and 30 townships around me – clerks who weren’t running elections but absolutely heard the gossip and had every interest in sharing good information. I didn’t tap that nearly enough. They could have been ambassadors, spreading the good word and flagging what they were hearing on the ground.

What these New England officials understand – intuitively, it seems – is that trust is retail. It’s built one conversation at a time. One town hall. One neighbor who stops you at the grocery store and actually gets a real answer. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it certainly wasn’t built with a single social media post. You have to show up. Again and again, even when it feels like you’re throwing starfish back into the ocean one by one, wondering whether it matters.

It matters.

Of course, you can’t do everything. But that’s a reason to be strategic, not a reason to do nothing. The clerks I met weren’t trying to counter every national narrative or win every argument. They were just present. That presence meant that when someone in their community had a question, there was a place to go.

That’s more important than ever now. We’re entering an era of AI-generated communications, synthetic content, and automated messaging at scale. I think the antidote is a known, human voice people can find when they need one.

For officials in larger jurisdictions, the lesson from smaller ones isn’t “be everywhere.” It’s “be somewhere, consistently.” Figure out what that looks like for your community, whether it’s using a tool like VoterCast, having a regular presence in local online spaces, or just committing to showing up at the events where your voters actually are. The scale changes, but the principle doesn’t.

But that’s a long game. In the meantime: Show up. Be you.
